Gripsholm Castle stands in Mariefred, a day trip from Stockholm by train to Läggesta and then a short bus ride. Inside are dungeons, armouries, cannons, a stuffed lion and hundreds of portraits. Children can take on a picture hunt by themselves during ordinary opening hours, and everyone who completes it collects a reward at the ticket office. A second trail, the fashion safari with Leo the Lion, starts with a map from the front desk and sends children looking for its details in the portrait collection.
The castle is made for walking rather than wheeling: there are no lifts, several steps and no ramps, and only the Royal Gift Shop and Modellkammaren are wheelchair accessible. Your own buggy stays outside, but specially adapted buggies that protect the interiors can be hired.
In October 2026 the castle opens only on selected weekend days, and hours vary by date.
