7About travelling in Africa

Africa asks more planning than most family destinations and gives more back for it. Wildlife is the draw, and wildlife keeps its own hours — which is how children who fight bedtime every night at home discover that getting up at five is worth it when there is something to see.

Most safari lodges set a minimum age, often six or eight, and it is worth checking before falling in love with one. Below that age the coasts and cities do the work: Cape Town, Marrakesh and the Kenyan beaches all have short transfers, and a child who cannot sit still in a vehicle for four hours will be far happier there.
