Our editorial assessment — not user ratings.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden was founded in 1913 and spreads across a hillside in Cape Town, with three gates, three restaurants and a Conservatory that keeps shorter hours than the garden around it. The City Sightseeing Hop On Hop Off bus stops at the Visitors’ Centre by Gate 1 every day of the week, and there are stop-and-drop zones at all three gates. The trade-off is the terrain: the garden is set on a very steep gradient, and not all of it can be reached by wheelchair, although all visitor facilities are accessible and an accessibility map shows the routes.

Tips & tricks

Bring a picnic — the lawns are set up for it and there are shaded grove sections for prams and nap times. Pack a hat and water; it’s a large, mostly shadeless garden and Cape Town mornings warm up fast.
