Brookfield Zoo is a full day out from Chicago, with restaurants and food stands spread across the grounds. You can also bring your own food and drink, as long as it is not alcohol and not in glass containers.
Plan the order of the day around Tropic World. It closes earlier than the rest of the zoo, and that closing time can shift with weather, temperature and animal care needs, so it makes sense to go there first rather than leave it for the afternoon.
The trade-off comes with a stroller. Strollers are allowed on the grounds but not inside Tropic World, Australia House, The Fragile Kingdom or Dolphin Bay, so at each of those houses you leave it outside and carry the smallest children through.
The zoo has two gates with separate parking, and you can buy a parking pass in advance or on arrival.
