The Trevi Fountain is always visible from outside, without a ticket and even after visiting hours. The ticket only covers the inner perimeter, the monumental area down by the basin. Residents of Rome get in free with ID, as do people with disabilities and one companion, Roma MIC Card holders and children under five.
Tickets bought in advance are open-dated, so there is no time slot to hit, but they cannot be refunded or passed on. They do get you into the dedicated line, shared with free-entry visitors, while everyone else queues to buy at the entrance on Via della Stamperia. At the entrance itself you can only pay by card; cash works at Tourist Info Points, the Civic Museums and other authorised sales points.
The trade-off is for families with a stroller: there are steps down to the inner perimeter, so the stroller has to be left at the access control point, and there is no one to look after it. Inside the monumental area, eating, drinking, smoking and sitting on the edge of the basin are not allowed.
The fountain is inside Rome’s Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), so drivers should park outside it and walk or take public transport into the historic centre.
