Whipsnade Zoo is built for a long day out. Next to the Butterfly House is a children’s farm, and Hullabazoo Adventure Play covers more than 7,800 square metres of themed outdoor play, with bridges, swings, climbing frames, sit-on crocodiles, tunnels, boats and mini safari jeeps. When it rains, Hullabazoo Indoor Play and other indoor and sheltered spaces take over. The animal houses and Passage through Asia shut a little before the zoo itself, so visit those first if you plan to stay until closing.
The catering outlets have options for different dietary needs, and Viewpoint serves a children’s afternoon tea for two children at £25. Booking tickets online costs less than paying at the gate.
One thing to plan around: several of the bigger draws cost extra on top of admission. Driving your car around the zoo is paid at the gate on the day, the Great Whipsnade Railway steam train runs at weekends and in school holidays for an additional charge, and the Mini Rangers driving adventure, where children drive a mini Land Rover Defender, is charged separately too.
