Entry is by timed ticket, and the castle is busiest from opening and throughout the morning. Everyone goes through an airport-style security check on arrival, and it moves faster the fewer bags you carry. During UK school holidays, the Pug Yard Learning Centre just inside the castle walls opens for families. It has free crafts, storytelling and make-and-takes, and a Chill Out Zone for toddlers with a train set, Duplo, books and beanbags. It is breastfeeding friendly, has a family bathroom with a changing table, and has an indoor lunch hall for picnics when the weather is bad. That is the catch: all of this opens only in the school holidays. Some seasonal programmes are included in the standard ticket, such as ‘A Castle under Siege’ half-term activities from 24 October 2026 and a Festive Weekend in December. At the end of your visit, ask a Warden to stamp your ticket. It then becomes a 1-Year Pass with free re-admission for 12 months, though a transaction fee applies when you pre-book the return visit.
