Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum that is also a lived-in neighbourhood, a short day trip from Amsterdam. It has been open to the public since 1961.
Getting there is easiest by public transport: both a bus line and a train stop serve the site. The trade-off is the car: parking on site and in the surrounding area is limited, there can be a wait at the car park, and the site itself advises using a park-and-ride instead.
For a meal with children, the pancake restaurant De Kraai sits close to the car park and entrance and serves pancakes, sandwiches, salads and soups. De Baleine, an annex to restaurant De Walvis, does takeaway coffee and has a terrace.
