The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization was founded in 2002 and opened to the public in 2021. For families, the useful part is that children have their own layer of the visit: Kimet is a children’s museum built as a hands-on journey through Ancient Egyptian life, the museum runs an ongoing programme of interactive workshops for children, and pre-booked children’s tours are tailored to young visitors’ interests. Children must stay with an adult throughout the museum.
Getting around is straightforward: every exhibit can be reached by elevator, and wheelchairs are lent free of charge.
The trade-off is for families who travel with a full day’s kit: large bags and backpacks are not allowed into the museum and must go to the cloakroom, as must umbrellas, so pack what you need for the galleries into something small.
