The Grand Egyptian Museum is an archaeological museum in Giza, designed by Heneghan Peng and opened to the public in 2025. For families, the part to plan around is the GEM Children’s Museum, which works through its themes with hands-on activities, interactive games and tech. Its programmes are split by age group and each is only valid for children in that range, so siblings of different ages may end up in different programmes.
The trade-off is the ticket. It is tied to a set date and time and allows a single entry, so you can’t step out for lunch and come back in, and outside food and drinks aren’t allowed on the premises anyway. Eating on site is the plan: Zooba, the Cairo-based Egyptian street-food chain, serves a menu made just for GEM visitors. Inside the galleries only small water bottles are allowed; all other food and drink stays out.
Large bags and backpacks over 40 x 40 cm can’t go inside and have to be left in the cloakroom or storage areas, which is worth knowing before you pack a day bag for the kids.
