Walyunga National Park is a national park within day-trip reach of Perth, with deep pools and rapids along its stretch of river. The Syd’s Rapids and Aboriginal Heritage Walk trails can be joined at the Walyunga Pool carpark or at Boongarup Pool, where the two trails meet. They are family-friendly trails, with interpretation along the way on Indigenous history, plants and animals, and the history of white-water rafting here.
At Boongarup Pool you can unpack a picnic and sit in the shade of the flooded gums around the water. After the rains, the park’s pools and rapids become some of the most exciting sections of the Avon Descent, an annual adventure river race.
The one thing to plan around is that dogs and other pets are not allowed anywhere in the park, so the family dog has to stay at home.
