Fremantle Prison was founded in 1855 and is on the Australian National Heritage List as well as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it is a museum, and the way into the prison itself is a guided tour: Convict Prison, Behind Bars and True Crime, plus the separately ticketed Tunnels Tour and Torchlight Tour. The Gatehouse, with the Visitor Centre and Convict Depot, is open without a tour ticket.
Tickets can be bought on the day, subject to availability, but tours can sell out in peak periods and school holidays, and a booking can’t be refunded or transferred. While the Prison Café is being renovated, drinks and snacks are sold from the relocated gift shop instead.
The trade-off is that not every tour is open to every child: the Tunnels Tour has a minimum age, and True Crime and the Torchlight Tour are recommended for older children only. On the price list, the Convict Prison and Behind Bars tours carry no age note.
