Schoenbrunn Zoo sits inside the park of Schoenbrunn Palace in western Vienna, founded in 1752 and still laid out around the historic core of animal houses. It has three entrances, and the one you pick shapes the walk: the path leading from the Tirolergarten entrance up into the historic part is very steep and rather unsuitable for a wheelchair, and while the treetop path is the better way round, it can be closed in bad weather. Wheelchairs themselves are lent out free at all three entrances, provided you ring the info centre ahead and leave an ID as deposit.
One thing to settle before you buy: the day ticket is for the animals. The Palmenhaus, the Wuestenhaus and the palace itself need tickets of their own, and there are combination and annual tickets if you mean to see more than one of them. Group tickets can only be bought at the zoo, where advance reservation is neither needed nor possible, while individual day tickets can also be bought online.
Two house rules are worth knowing before you set off. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the palace park and therefore not in the zoo either, with assistance dogs carrying ID, vaccination record and a marked vest the exception. And there is no cash machine inside the zoo, so sort out money before you arrive.
