Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium was founded in 1898 and is run as a nonprofit organization.
The decision to make before you go is when to buy tickets. Buying online is cheaper, but a single-day ticket can only be used on the date printed on it, and because the zoo stays open in rain, snow, heat and cold, requests to reschedule over the weather are turned down. Buying at the gate costs more but leaves the choice of day until the morning itself.
There are no lockers and nowhere to store coolers or picnic lunches, so bagged lunch-style food either comes around with you or stays in the car at your own risk. The zoo buildings close 15 to 30 minutes before the park itself does.
