OUR FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Family Intelligence

This is a big, old-fashioned collection museum in a building that is itself part of the visit, and it is worth knowing before you go that two things split the family up. The guided roof tour, which takes you out above the rooftops of Vienna, is closed to younger children and is not reachable step-free, so one adult stays downstairs with the small ones while the others go up. And the halls at the far end of the numbered sequence are shut for rebuilding at the moment, so a route planned from an old floor plan will run into a locked door. The Café Restaurant sits under the upper dome and serves Viennese standards, from coffee and cakes to warm dishes, though its kitchen stops serving before the café itself closes. Audioguides are borrowed at the info desk. If you are coming as a school or children’s group rather than as a family, the museum wants you registered in advance.

Why kids will love it

The children’s programme here is unusually concrete: short drop-in meetings split by age, guided tours that start as young as three, birthday tours graded so that four-year-olds and six-year-olds get different routes, and a night in the museum where children arrive with a sleeping bag and a torch and an adult stays with them. That is a museum treating a five-year-old as a visitor with a programme of their own, rather than as someone being walked past the display cases — and the collection is still there to wander when the programme ends.
