MOTAT is a transport, technology and aviation museum split between two locations: MOTAT Great North Road and the Aviation Hall on Motions Road. Heritage trams run along the Western Springs Tramway between the two, and if you arrive by car the museum suggests parking at the Aviation Hall end and taking the tram across.
Great North Road is the practical base for a family day: the café and the playgrounds are both there, and toilets sit between Buildings 1 and 2 and inside Buildings 5 and 6. At Motions Road, toilets are at both ends of the Aviation Hall. You are welcome to bring your own food and drink, and there are picnic spots and rest areas across the grounds, some outdoors and some undercover. Several bus routes stop right at Great North Road (Stop 8122).
On Live Days, every third Sunday of the month, the rail and steam rail collection is in operation.
The one thing to plan around: MOTAT is quietest after 2.30pm, but the café closes at 3pm, so a calm late visit works best with a packed lunch or an early meal.
