The thing to sort out before you walk in is what you are carrying. Umbrellas, backpacks, shopping bags and large bags have to be checked into the cloakroom, which is free, and bags may not be worn on your back in the galleries at all, to keep them away from the artworks. With small children that means deciding at the door what you need in hand for the next hour and leaving the rest behind the counter.
No food or drink is permitted in the gallery itself. The cafe is on level one; if you have brought lunch, the amphitheatre behind the gallery and Albert Park are the suggested spots, and the East Terrace on the second floor is sheltered and heated for rainy, cold days. There is an accessible, gender-inclusive bathroom on every level, each in a self-contained compartment with full privacy, which is the one to aim for with a child who needs space and time.
For the ticketed exhibitions, entry times run every fifteen minutes.
