Jasper National Park is open year-round, and getting in runs on Parks Canada passes: adults and seniors pay, youth don’t, and there is a family/group rate. The same day pass is accepted at Banff and a string of other national parks, so a trip that links several parks doesn’t mean buying a new pass at each one while it is still valid.
The park’s facilities include picnic areas and picnic shelters, restaurants or cafés, restrooms, parking and a playground. For older kids there are paid extras: the Healing Through Fire guided walk, and fishing permits for families who want to try casting a line. Fire permits are sold by the day. You can also arrive by train, with Via Rail running regular service to Jasper.
The trade-off is timing. Peak visitor season runs June through August; the fall is quieter, and can be the best time of year for hiking and biking.
