Carnuntum is a former Roman military camp, now an archaeological site and open-air museum at Petronell-Carnuntum. One day ticket covers two venues, the Roman City Quarter with its reconstructed Roman houses and the Museum Carnuntinum, and the amphitheatres and the Pagan Gate can be visited without a ticket. You can drive or come by train.
The reconstructed houses are also where the site gets hard work with small children: they have a few steps and uneven surfaces, and the Roman road around them is only partly passable with a stroller. Plan to carry a toddler for parts of the visit. The Museum Carnuntinum, by contrast, is fully accessible.
In 2026 the Roman city turns 30, and the anniversary year brings special tours and a new VR experience.
