Admont Abbey was founded in 1074, and a visit today centres on its library and museum. The abbey bills the library as the largest monastery library in the world. You can see it on your own, or add a short guided tour on top of the entry ticket.
The catch for families from abroad is language: the guided library tour is given in German. If your children don’t speak German, the audioguide, available in several languages, will probably be the better choice.
Inside, museum rules apply throughout. Eating, drinking and touching the artworks or exhibits are not allowed in any room, so have snacks before you go in or after you come out. Photos for private use are allowed across the museum, but only without flash and without a tripod.
Individual tickets can’t be reserved in advance; only groups book ahead. The abbey also runs children’s and holiday programmes, but you have to register for these in advance by email.
