London with Kids on a Budget: 9 Free and Low-Cost Days Out

Updated 19 Oct 2026 · 1 day

A family day in London does not have to start with a ticket desk. The city’s national museums and several galleries are free to enter, and at others the children go free while the adults pay. These nine places each have their own page on JuniorTravelClub with the full family facts.

Where the savings come from

London is expensive, but some of its best family days cost nothing at the door. The first six places below have free general entry. At the last three the adults pay but the children go free or nearly free. Every fact comes from the place’s own page on JuniorTravelClub; paid exhibitions and extras are not included.

Free entry

1. Science Museum

Five floors of galleries at the Science Museum are free, packed lunches are welcome in the picnic areas and there is a family show at weekends. You pay only for a paid experience you choose to add.

2. Natural History Museum

General admission to the Natural History Museum costs nothing, and there is a dedicated Picnic Area, so lunch can come from home too.

3. Victoria and Albert Museum

The V&A is free and unbooked. Child-sized ear defenders are lent at the Learning Centre desk and there is a Quiet Space for a child who needs a break.

4. National Gallery

Entry to the National Gallery costs nothing, buggies are welcome inside, and toilets and baby changing are just inside the entrance.

5. Tate Modern

General entry to Tate Modern is free, and Tate Draw gives children a way to make something rather than only look.

6. Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection has free, unticketed entry with no queue. You can come and go during opening hours, so the visit lasts as long as the children do.
