Plan Osborne around the grounds as much as the house. There are plenty of picnicking spots if you bring your own lunch, and the Victoria Hall Restaurant is one of several food and drink outlets around the estate if you don’t. Tickets are sold by arrival slot, so aim to turn up at your booked time; after that you can stay as long as you like within opening hours. Arriving by bus, train or bicycle earns a discount, but only on tickets bought on site on the day. The one thing to plan around is the season: during the winter months the Swiss Cottage is closed and only the ground floor of the house is open, and the site is closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
