In the Play gallery children can stack building blocks in Build It and try the marble run and sand spinner in Moving & Shaking; in the Imagine gallery there are costumes to try on in The Stage. Some exhibitions carry an entrance charge, though there is always something to do without one, and a paid V&A membership covers all exhibitions for the member and up to four under-16s.
Cold food and drink are welcome: packed lunches can be eaten in the Town Square or the Museum Gardens, and in the Common Room at weekends and during Tower Hamlets school holidays. Wheeled luggage and large bags aren’t allowed in the galleries and there is no large-luggage storage, but there are free lockers on the lower-ground floor, first come, first served.
The trade-off is arriving by car: parking near the museum is limited and can’t be booked in advance, so public transport is the easier way in.
