General admission to the National Gallery is free, and you don’t have to book: walk-up entry is available, while a free booked ticket gets you fast-track entry, and booking ahead is recommended. Some exhibitions carry a separate charge, and an exhibition ticket also covers general admission. There are restaurants, bars and cafés on site. For step-free arrival, Charing Cross is the nearest overground station, and Tottenham Court Road and Westminster are the closest step-free Tube stations. The one thing to plan around is the dedicated family space, where children can play and find out more about paintings: it is open only at weekends and in the holidays.
