Alcatraz was founded as a federal penitentiary in 1934, and a visit starts with a ferry ticket from Alcatraz City Cruises. The ticket covers the audio tour of the cellhouse, and when you land, the program board at the dock lists that day’s ranger and staff programs, which are included as well. Junior Ranger books and programs are often available, though they are not on a fixed schedule.
The trade-off is the climb. The cellhouse sits at the top of the island, and the route up from the dock is steep all the way. Visitors with limited mobility can ride the accessible tram (S.E.A.T.) from the dock to the Cell House, but most roadways and walking routes on the island have extreme slopes. Inside the cellhouse, an elevator goes up to the second story.
Plan snacks around the ferry rather than the island: the park asks visitors to eat only on the dock to protect the seabirds, while bottled water is fine everywhere. The island closes earlier in fall, winter and spring than in summer. In the wet winter months, bring rain gear; the bookstores sell it if you forget.
