La Barceloneta is a city beach with showers, toilets, beach volleyball courts and outdoor gym areas. In season there are sun loungers and parasols as well, though whether they are free or for hire is not stated. Restaurants and beach bars nearby serve rice dishes, fresh fish and a mix of coastal and mountain flavours.

All of Barcelona’s beaches have reserved parking, accessible routes onto the sand, adapted toilets and wooden walkways that run as close to the water as possible, and Barceloneta also has an inclusive changing room with a hoist.

The trade-off is that the beach’s services follow the bathing season. Outside it there is no lifeguard service, and Barceloneta’s own public toilets are not among the few kept open, so an off-season visit means planning around facilities on the neighbouring beaches.

Why kids will love it

Children can dig in the sand with a beach volleyball court and an outdoor gym alongside, and lunch can be rice or fresh fish from one of the beach bars nearby.

Tips & tricks

Go in the morning or late afternoon – the middle of the day in August is shoulder to shoulder and there is no natural shade, so bring an umbrella or hire one. The beaches further north, towards Bogatell and Mar Bella, are noticeably calmer with young children. Keep bags in sight; beach theft is the city’s classic opportunist crime.
