Getting to the Statue of Liberty means a ferry, and the ticket that puts you on board is also your way into the museums on Liberty Island and Ellis Island. The crown is a separate, limited ticket sold online only, and a climb of 162 steps from the statue’s feet, with children kept with an adult the whole way. Lockers next to the secondary screening building take a quarter as a deposit, and quarters only, so bring coins. Free wheelchairs are lent on both islands, first come, first served. If you drive to The Battery, there is no designated parking; private lots along West Street and South Street charge a fee. The trade-off is the queue: security screening comes before the ferry, and at peak times, including summer, weekends and holidays, the wait can run to an hour or more before you are on the water.

Why kids will love it

The ferry crossing is part of the outing, and one ticket takes in the museums on two islands, so the day holds more than a look at the statue.

Tips & tricks

Book ferry tickets weeks ahead in summer — crown access sells out months in advance and children under 42 inches cannot go up to the crown. Security screening is airport-style before boarding, so arrive early and pack light. A pedestal-only or ground-level ticket is enough for most families with children under 8.
