Wilsons Promontory, known locally as the Prom, was founded as a park in 1898 and is today a national park in Victoria. Tidal River is the base: the campground, the cabins and the Visitor Information Centre are all there. The park is unusually well set up for families who need extra support. Beach wheelchairs, an all-terrain wheelchair and a TrailRider can be borrowed from the Visitor Information Centre, two self-contained cabins have accessible bathrooms, and Parks Victoria offers social scripts for children on the autism spectrum to prepare them for the visit. The trade-off is the planning: staying overnight means booking camping or a cabin in advance, and the refund shrinks the closer to the trip you cancel. Camping fees are reduced for now, though the current amounts are not stated. Dogs cannot come, as they are not permitted in national parks; assistance dogs are the exception.
