Wellington Zoo was founded in 1906 and is run as a nonprofit organization.
The thing to plan around is the ground itself: the zoo is built on a steep hill that can be hard going, and the Visitor Advisors can show you which pathways are more accessible. Pushchairs can be hired for $20 for the day, with $10 refunded if the pushchair comes back in good condition, and wheelchairs are lent free of charge if you ask on arrival. Some of the Close Encounters are not wheelchair accessible.
There are a few water fountains around the zoo, but it pays to bring a water bottle. There are no lockers; if you arrive with large bags, staff may be able to keep them in the front office. Free car parking around the zoo and in the Newtown Park car park next door is limited, so it goes to those who arrive early.
