The Wartburg is a castle and museum in Eisenach, founded in 1067, built in the Romanesque style and listed as a World Heritage Site. It is open every day of the year, and a visit comes in two parts: the outdoor grounds, the castle courtyards and the Thüringer Erlebnisportal are free, while the interiors need a ticket, bought on the day or online in advance.
The interiors are where families with small children have to plan. Strollers are not allowed inside, and neither are bulky items such as backpacks and child back carriers. The route runs over uneven floors, stairs, steps and edges, with low passages along the way. Anything you can’t take in can go in the free lockers at the car park or in the service area, and eating and drinking is not allowed in the museum rooms.
Outside the museum there is a playground, Spielplatz Eselei, and the Burgcafe, though their seasonal opening hours are not stated. From the car park, a minibus shuttle runs up to the castle.
