Toba Aquarium is a public aquarium in Toba, open to the public since 1955. The whole visit is indoors, so rain does not change the plan; only the walk from the multi-storey car park calls for an umbrella. Scheduled programmes include a sea lion show and walrus interaction time.
The catch is that those shows and the animal feeding times can be cancelled or changed without notice if an animal is unwell or the weather turns, so a visit planned around one particular show may not get it.
For babies, the baby room sits between Zone H, home of the dugong, and the Plaza Shop, which sells nappies and wipes. Strollers are lent free at the entrance hall but cannot be reserved, and strollers are not allowed into show venues, where they are left in marked spaces. Wheelchairs are also lent free in limited numbers; ask staff on the day. Assistance dogs displaying their working status are welcome.
Flash photography is banned at some tanks, so check the sign in front of each one before taking a picture. Credit cards are accepted for single payments only. Car parking costs 1,000 yen a day, or 500 yen in lot C.
