The easiest way to arrive is the ferry from Circular Quay; there is also a direct bus from the QVB in the city. Get there early if you can: the zoo says crowds are thinner in the morning and many animals are more active before their afternoon sleep, and arriving early is essential if you want to book an animal encounter.
Keeper talks and presentations are free with your ticket. The Seals for the Wild and Free Flight Birds shows each run twice a day, and Backyard to Bush is a family trail with farm animals and Australian favourites. The Taronga Wildlife Express runs through the heart of the zoo for a small fare each way.
The trade-off is the ground: the zoo is spread over hilly terrain and some areas are steep, so comfortable footwear matters. Wheelchair and mobility scooter hire are available, and sensory support is offered for visitors who need it.
You can bring your own picnic and refill water bottles at stations around the zoo. The zoo is cashless, including at the cafés and shops, so bring a card. Parent rooms, public bathrooms and first aid are marked on the zoo map.
