The official advice is to come at sunrise: there are fewer people, and the air is cool and pleasant. That is also the trade-off for a family, because the ticket windows at the Western and Eastern Gates open before dawn, so seeing the Taj at its quietest means getting children up in the dark.
At the entrance, foreign and domestic visitors are sent into separate queues, and signs show you which one to join. For foreign visitors only, the entry ticket includes shoe covers, a water bottle, a tourist map of Agra and use of the battery bus and golf carts. Visitors of every nationality can leave their shoes for free on the racks just below the main mausoleum. Water bottles are allowed inside, and anything you cannot take in can be left in the cloakrooms at either gate.
There is also night viewing, but only around the full moon: on the full-moon night and the two nights either side, in short sessions for small groups.
