Open since 1978, the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium sits in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha. You can walk into the building and its display zone without a ticket; what you pay for is a seat in the Cosmic Skydome. The programme splits by age. Perfect Little Planet is a shorter children’s show that tours the Solar System through the eyes of an alien family on holiday and ends with a virtual tour of the Brisbane night sky, while Passport to the Universe is pitched at older children. Some sessions book out quickly, so buy tickets before you go. The trade-off for sensitive younger viewers is that the children’s show contains sudden sound effects, fast-moving scenes and flashing light sequences. For a meal, the Botanic Gardens Café belongs to the surrounding gardens rather than to the planetarium itself.
