The Royal Castle in Warsaw is a royal palace and museum, founded in 1598 for King Sigismund III Vasa to a design by Giovanni Battista Trevano. Inside, the visit is split into routes rather than one long circuit: the Royal Route and the Museum Route can be bought on their own, the Castle Route combines both, and the Tin-Roofed Palace has its own Palace Route. The Gold Ticket covers every permanent exhibition in the castle and the Tin-Roofed Palace.
The Castle Gardens are open to everyone free of charge, which gives you somewhere outdoors before or after the rooms, though they can close for a while in bad weather.
The trade-off is free Wednesday. Admission costs nothing that day for the Tin-Roofed Palace and a shortened route through the Royal Apartments, from the Oval Gallery to the Crown Horse Guards Chamber, plus the Lanckoroński Gallery. But the free tickets are limited and handed out at the ticket office on the day, with no reservations and no guided visits, so a family that wants the full castle or a fixed time is better off paying on another day.
