Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium was founded in 1992 and is spread across a North Building and a South Building. Events around the two buildings include a dolphin performance, public orca training, penguin feeding time and a sardine tornado. In the South Building’s Touch Tank, children can touch hermit crabs, starfish and sea urchins from the shores around Nagoya, although it currently runs only irregularly. Hours vary by period, and the trade-off is Mondays: outside Golden Week, July to September, the New Year holidays and spring break, the aquarium closes every Monday (the following day when Monday is a public holiday), with occasional extra closures for maintenance. Balloons and bouncy balls are not allowed in, because they could end up in the pools of the whales and dolphins kept in the North Building, and staff may turn away other items they judge dangerous. Food you bring can only be eaten at the outdoor Shiokaze Plaza or the covered stadium seating in the North Building. Strollers for babies aged 7 to 24 months can be hired for 100 yen a day, for use inside only and in limited numbers, and both buildings have a baby corner, with formula preparation possible at the one in the North Building.

Why kids will love it

On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, primary and junior high school pupils can pick up a free observation booklet for looking more closely at the animals on display, while the first 50 copies last.
