The Palais des Papes is a Gothic palace in the heart of Avignon, built by the architects Pierre Poisson, Jean de Louvres and Bertran Nogayrol and now a classified historical monument and art museum. A ticket covers both the palace and the papal gardens. Plan for one thing with small children: strollers cannot go inside and must be left at the cloakroom, but the palace lends a baby carrier free of charge, so bring a toddler who is happy to be carried or to walk the rooms. Booking ahead is not required, though the palace recommends it.
