Omaha Beach is one of the D-Day landing beaches on the Normandy coast. Its name began as a code name, and the sand runs past several villages, from Vierville-sur-Mer through Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer to Colleville-sur-Mer.
The two ends suit different days. Vierville is the more family-oriented section, good for lounging, swimming and children’s games, with small pools on the sand that the sun warms, and shore fishing along the cliffs. Colleville’s wide sands are better for kites and sand yachting.
Lifeguards from the SNSM sea rescue service cover parts of the beach in summer. The local tourist office asks parents to keep watching their children anyway and to swim in the supervised sections.
The trade-off is getting there without a car. The bus from Bayeux runs once each way, only on some days and in some months, so a missed bus can end the day early.
