Olavinlinna is reached over a pontoon bridge, and taxis and other vehicles can drive right up to it on Tallisaari, so the walk in with small children is short. A step-free route, opened in 2015, leads into the first courtyard at the Vesiportti bastion, where the castle’s accessible exhibition and the children’s workshop, Pikku herttuan sali, sit side by side. The towers can only be climbed on a guided tour. That is where the trade-off lies for families with a baby: getting between the castle’s floors with a pushchair is hard, and on the guided tour it is impossible, so plan on carrying a small child or splitting up. The restaurant and summer café are upstairs as well, reached by stairs.
