Nevado del Ruiz is a volcano carrying a glacier, inside Los Nevados National Natural Park. Visits are tightly managed: entry needs a reservation made in advance, every visitor to the Brisas-Kumanday sector attends a compulsory induction talk, and nobody climbs to the glaciers or enters the protected area without authorization, proper gear and an authorized high-mountain guide. Age limits decide where a family can go. The road attractions of Brisas-Kumanday, the El Cisne centre and Laguna del Otún via cabaña Potosí accept younger children, while the remaining routes, traverses and summits carry a higher minimum age. The catch is the volcano itself: access depends on its activity level, and under a yellow alert, entry through Brisas only goes as far as Valle de las Tumbas, so check the current alert level with the Servicio Geológico Colombiano before setting out.
