Entry to the National Air and Space Museum is free, but every member of the family, babies included, needs a timed-entry pass. Once you are in, the pass does not limit how long you stay, so you can pace the visit around naps and snacks rather than a clock.
For the youngest, Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight has hands-on activities that let them imagine being a pilot. TEXTRON How Things Fly uses interactives to explain the science of flight to kids of all ages, and the Discovery Stations and Science Demonstrations add facilitated hands-on activities. Volunteer docents lead free highlights tours; times are posted at the Welcome Center.
Food is the Mars Café on the lower level. You cannot bring your own food or drinks into the museum, though bottled water is allowed.
The trade-off: part of the museum is still closed for renovation, so not every gallery may be open when you visit.
