Mount Ruapehu is a volcano, and for most families the day starts in Whakapapa Village. The national park visitor centre is there, with an all-hours foyer for weather and track information, and the village has toilets, shops, restaurants and cafes, so food and a break are close to the short walks.
The trade-off is the roads in winter. Depending on conditions, Bruce Road to the Whakapapa ski area can be limited to vehicles with chains or 4WD, or closed entirely, and Ohakune Mountain Road is often impassable due to snow in winter. Park and Ride shuttles to the ski areas leave from National Park Village and the Ohakune Carrot Park.
Staying overnight in a hut on the Round the Mountain Track needs a booking, because no spaces are held for walk-ins; children’s rates are lower than adult rates and infants stay free, with prices varying by season.
