OUR FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Family Intelligence

Los Nevados is a national park in Colombia’s Andean region, founded in 1973 and within day-trip reach of Pereira. How far you get depends on the Nevado del Ruiz volcano: while its activity stands at Yellow Alert Level, entry through the northern Brisas sector is allowed only as far as Valle de las Tumbas, and that limit follows the volcano rather than the calendar. Going higher, onto the glaciers, takes authorization, proper equipment and an authorized high-mountain guide.

The trade-off is the altitude itself. The park says the climb’s physical demands and height make it unsuitable for the youngest children, pregnant women and anyone with heart or respiratory problems, so the high route is not a casual family walk.

Why kids will love it

Children see volcano country in the high Andes up close, on a visitor route that, while Nevado del Ruiz remains on Yellow Alert, ends at Valle de las Tumbas.
