A large, shallow lake in western Hungary where summer days revolve around the beach, and where the water is gentle enough for families with toddlers.

Payment
Cards are widely accepted, but carry some Hungarian forints for small vendors and beach stalls.
Coming with kids
Shallow, safe water and well-kept shorelines suit even families with toddlers, and the water warms quickly in summer.
Storm warnings
Slow-flashing lights mean swim only within 500 m of shore; fast-flashing lights mean no swimming at all.
Emergencies
Water rescue: +36 30 383 8383; rescue boats are stationed near the beaches, with hospitals in Siófok and Keszthely.
Getting there
Trains from Budapest take about 1.5 hours to Siófok and 2.5–3 hours to Keszthely; the Tihany–Szántód car ferry crosses in 10–15 minutes.

Lake Balaton is a rift lake in Hungary, protected as a Ramsar and Natura 2000 site. In summer the beaches take centre stage: the water is shallow and warms quickly, and the shorelines are well kept, which is why the official tourism board points families with toddlers here. The lake is easy to reach by train from Budapest, and a car ferry links the northern and southern shores across the narrow point at Tihany. The trade-off is the weather: storm warning lights around the lake can restrict swimming to near the shore or stop it entirely, so a beach day can end early. Rescue boats are stationed near the beaches. Cards are widely accepted, but small beach stalls may want cash in forints.

Why kids will love it

Shallow, safe water and well-maintained shorelines make Balaton a beach holiday that works even with very young children.
