La Palmyre Zoo, founded in 1966, gives children one thing most zoos keep behind glass: corn sold at the entrance and in the zoo shop can be fed by hand to the giraffes, zebras, ostriches and antelopes. From Easter to Halloween there are also sea lion and bird presentations, though the morning and late-afternoon slots run only in busy periods.
The trade-off is the ground. The zoo is spread over hilly terrain with some steep drops, which matters if you are pushing a stroller or a wheelchair. You can step out and come back in, but only if you get a hand stamp at the entrance before leaving.
For food, a bar, fast-food stand and crêperie operate from the Easter holidays to All Saints’ Day; in winter it is the Café Boutique for a quick bite. Picnics are not allowed on the food-outlet tables. Arrive with time to spare at the end of the day, because some animals start going into their buildings in the last hour before closing. The zoo has two large free car parks.
