Kathmandu Zoo, run as the Central Zoo, is more than a walk past enclosures: there is a children’s ground with swings, a merry-go-round and other rides, an aquarium of sub-tropical fish, and paddleboats and rafting, though the zoo does not publish prices or age limits for the boats. A picnic shed gives a place to sit down and eat, and plastic bags are not allowed, so pack snacks in something else. The trade-off for visitors from abroad is the ticket: foreign nationals pay a much higher rate than Nepali nationals, for children as well as adults. Ticket sales stop earlier in winter than in summer, so plan an afternoon visit with that in mind.
