Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich was founded in 1911, with Emanuel von Seidl as architect, and is listed as an architectural heritage monument in Bavaria. It has two entrances, the Isar entrance and the Flamingo entrance, each with its own car park.
For children, the zoo has petting zoos at the Isar entrance and in Mühlendorf, open throughout the zoo’s opening hours. There is a large adventure playground, a separate play area for toddlers at Café Rhino, and a water playground that is at its best in the summer weeks. Restaurants and kiosks are spread around the grounds; from November to February, the cafés and kiosks open only in good weather, during school holidays and at weekends. Some keeper demonstrations can’t go ahead in rain, storm or snow.
The thing to plan around is how you move small children. You can bring your own buggy or pram, but the zoo has no areas to park one, so if you don’t want to push it all day, leave it in the car or at home. Handcarts can be rented at both entrances instead, but numbers are limited and they can run out on busy days.
The zoo is designed to be barrier-free as far as possible, from the paths to accessible toilets and the restaurants, and adult visitors with reduced mobility can borrow a mobility scooter free of charge. Anyone visiting on their birthday gets in free on showing valid ID at the ticket desk.
