Grand Teton was founded in 1929 and stretches north from Jackson along the foot of the Teton Range, so most days here are built around a drive with stops rather than a single gate. Coming in for the day takes no more than the entrance fee; sleeping here is a different exercise, because all lodging and campgrounds in the park are reservable and lodge rooms and campsites can fill months in advance. That is the trade-off: a day trip can be decided the night before, a night inside the park usually cannot. Backcountry camping permits are reserved from early January to May 15 each year and carry a non-refundable booking fee. Bears set the rest of the house rules, and when they are not in use, all odorous items have to be stored in a bear-resistant food storage locker or in a hard-sided vehicle with the doors locked and windows closed, day and night. Pets can come into the park but must be restrained at all times, and they are not allowed on hiking trails or inside visitor centers.
