Founded in 1340 and commissioned by the Republic of Venice, the Doge’s Palace is a Gothic palace that is now a museum run by MUVE, the Venice civic museums. Its ticket is shared with the other St Mark’s Square museums, the Museo Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, so decide beforehand how much of the square your children have in them rather than trying to use it all.
The one thing the standard ticket won’t get you is the Secret Itinerary. It and The Doge’s Hidden Treasures are the only two visits that are by reservation only, for a limited number of visitors, and both are priced separately. If the hidden rooms are what your family came for, book them first and fit the rest around them.
Travel light: large bags, backpacks and umbrellas have to be left in the cloakroom, which is free, and suitcases, trolleys and other bulky luggage are not allowed into the museum at all. A lift is available to visitors, restrooms are on site, and the Museum Café inside serves Italian food with a nod to Venetian cooking.
