OUR FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Family Intelligence

Congaree is a flat, shaded walk rather than a climb. The elevated Boardwalk Trail is the spine of most visits: an easy loop with benches to rest on, short enough that a small child can do the whole thing. Beyond it, the Bluff Trail gives a second easy loop north of the visitor center.

Water is what makes this forest and what interrupts it. Almost every trail here apart from the elevated part of the Boardwalk and the Bluff, Firefly and Longleaf trails floods from time to time, and when the river is high the backcountry paths and even sections of the boardwalk can be closed, with no fixed season for when it happens. Check the park’s alerts on the morning you go and keep a shorter plan in reserve.

The visitor center end of the park is the practical base, with parking, restrooms and a picnic shelter close together. Dogs are welcome on the trails, on a leash no longer than six feet and under control at all times.

Why kids will love it

Children get a free self-guided brochure at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center with numbered wooden markers along the boardwalk to match up as they walk, which turns a forest loop into a hunt. In late spring, synchronous fireflies put on a light show along the Firefly Trail, though the park does not publish the dates. The park also runs ranger-guided canoe tours, and paddling adaptations are loaned free of charge if you tell the park at least 24 hours in advance.
